Ericsson Application Awards 2013 – 40,000EUR up for Grabs

Welcome to the Ericsson Application Awards 2013 – an opportunity for developers to gain exposure within the telecom world, a chance to reach out to customers via Ericsson distribution channels and a chance to win €25,000 in prize money.

Who can join the competition
The competition is global and open to both students and small & medium sized enterprises (< 100 employees). There are two categories: one for students and one for companies. For more details see Rules and Terms & Conditions.

Theme
The purpose of the theme “Apps for City Life” is to promote innovations towards the Networked Society by connecting people, things and places to empower individuals and society.

Requirements
Develop an application based on the Android platform (Web or Native) that addresses the theme.
Submit an demo-video and a working prototype application by February 28, 2013.
The application must be an original work.

Prizes
Prize table for each category:
1st place: EUR 25 000
2nd place: EUR 10 000
3rd place: EUR 5 000
4th and 5th place: Honorary Diplomas

The prize money will be shared equally among the registered team members. The winning teams will be contacted to ensure payment of prize. Winners will be announced on: www.ericssonapplicationawards.com

Deadlines 2013
February 28, 2013: Last date for Application Submission
March 1, 2013: Evaluation of entries
March 16, 2013: Announcement of semi-finalists (top 5) in each category
March 20, 2013: Global evaluation of semi-finalist entries
April 25, 2013: Announcement of finalist teams (top 2) in each category

Evaluation Process
The first evaluation phase results in the selection of the semi-finalist teams, the top 5 in each category. The second evaluation phase of the semi-finalist entries is will be evaluated by representatives from 3-4 countries globally and results in the selection of the finalist teams, the top 2 in each category.

The submitted applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
– Android application (Native or Web)
– Addresses the theme “Apps for the Networked Society”
– Working application prototype
– Innovative solution
– Business potential

Telecom Operators launching Cloud systems: Alcatel CloudBand

I had an earlier post on Prepaid Telecommunications: A Vendor Perspective where i was looking at cloud based activities from telecom vendors like Alcatel, Ericsson, Huawei and the rest. Well, it looks like Alcatel is coming out with their on offering called Cloud Band., which brings together the computing power and flexibility of the cloud with the high performance, reliability and security of communications networks. CloudBand is the foundation for a new class of ‘carrier cloud’ services that will enable communications service providers to bring the benefits of the cloud to their own networks and business operations, and put them in an ideal position to offer a new range of high-performance cloud services to enterprises and consumers.

Toward an IPv6 world in mobile networks

IPv6 or Internet Protocol Version 6 is the next generation protocol for the Internet. It’s designed to provide several advantages over current Internet Protocol Version 4 (or IPv4). Both IPv6 and IPv4 define network layer protocol i.e., how data is sent from one computer to another computer over packet-switched networks such as the Internet.

IPv4 has served the internet well, but the world has to shift to IPv6 – and soon. Mobile networks need to be among the first. Fortunately, there are good mechanisms available to ease the IPv4 to IPv6 transition.
