I want to believe that the slogan of Google Maps “Use Google Maps on your phone, and never carry a paper map again.” is becoming real in developing countries too. While we already believe such slogans to be true for developed countries where maps and GIS information are up to date/real time, we doubt the effect on places like Nigeria. It’s been a while i used Google Earth myself and then, Nigeria Maps was still a little shabby but over this last weekend, I decided to go Google Maps on my Blackberry and Walllahhh!!!!… Its a new world.

Features:

My Location: See your location on a map, even if you don’t have GPS.Even though the map didnt get my house, I was surprised to the amount of information available about my area and street.

Driving directions: Thanks to My Location, you don’t even have to enter your starting point – This was fascinating. I was going to go to Oregun as it was a sunday and i used the Get Directions from Surulere to Daystar Christian Centre and here is what i got…

  • Head North on Adelabu Rd towards Bola Shadu Str – 200m
  • At the Roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Ogunlana Drive – 1.2km
  • Turn right at Itire Road – 1.okm
  • Turn left at Ayilara Street – 550m
  • Take the 3rd right toward Ikorodu Rd/ Western Avenue / A1 – 130m
  • Turn left at Ikorodu Rd/Western Avenue/ A1 – 8.7 km
  • Turn left at Kudirat Abiola Way – 1.7km
  • Daystar Christian Centre, Opebi Link Road, Lagos, Nigeria

Seriously, I was impressed with the Result…. are you saying i i dont need to ask all the misdirected people on the road anymore if i have my BB?

Latitude: This was the most fascinating to me. With the Latitude activated with a particular friend, you dont need to call and ask a friend where he or she is, its right there on the Map, Yes right there. Just activate the Latitude on your Google Maps and share witj your friends. Start Maps and then select “Join Latitude.”
